Your numbers

The hours in your contract or your average paid casual hours.

Hours actually in front of learners each week.

Minutes of preparation for each hour you deliver.

Weekly hours assessing work and writing feedback.

Records, reporting, validation, meetings, emails.

Total pay divided by paid hours.

Weeks you actually work, excluding leave.

How this is worked out

Actual hours = contact + (contact × preparation minutes ÷ 60) + marking + administration. Unpaid hours = actual − paid. Unpaid value = unpaid × hourly rate × working weeks.

What it assumes

  • A typical week is representative of the year.
  • Your effective hourly rate is total pay divided by paid hours.

What it does NOT account for

  • Does not account for paid overtime or time in lieu.
  • Does not model peak periods such as marking weeks separately.
  • Does not constitute industrial or legal advice about your entitlements.

What to do next

  • Track one real week against these estimates before relying on them.
  • If the gap is large, raise it with your manager with the weekly figure, not the annual one.
  • Check your award or enterprise agreement for how non-contact time should be counted.
